Psalm 19

Psalm 19

I’ve just returned from a super relaxing holiday on the North Coast.  It’s been an extremely busy year so far and so it was great to take time out and chill for a week.  We were staying in a lovely holiday cottage right at the water’s edge, overlooking Portstewart Strand.  I brought the camera along just in case as we had a prime view looking out to sea.  Although this was a holiday, I still managed a few sunsets, as I literally was able to stand with the patio doors open and shoot as I pleased!     This shot was taken just a few feet away from our cottage.  I had been reminded earlier that day of some amazing words from Psalm 19, which I think (for me anyway) sums up this image perfectly.  These are from the Message translation.   1-2 God’s glory is on tour in the skies,     God-craft on exhibit across the horizon. Madame Day holds classes every morning,     Professor Night lectures each evening. 3-4 Their words aren’t heard,     their voices aren’t recorded, But their silence fills the earth:     unspoken truth is spoken everywhere. 4-5 God makes a huge dome     for the sun—a superdome! The morning sun’s a new husband     leaping from his honeymoon bed, The daybreaking sun an athlete     racing to the tape. 6 That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies     from sunrise to sunset, Melting ice, scorching deserts,     warming hearts to faith. 7-9 The revelation of God is whole     and pulls our lives together. The signposts of God are clear     and point out the right road. The life-maps of God are right,     showing the way to joy. The directions of God are plain     and easy... read more

Scouting A Location

Scouting A Location

One of the frustrating things about landscape photography (apart from the weather!), can be knowing when to head out and where to head to.  One of the things I find extremely useful when planning a trip is an App called The Photographer’s Ephemeris. This App tells me exactly where the sun is going to be at anytime of the day and in any location I choose.  You can imagine how useful this is when deciding on your plan of attack as there are certain locations that can only be photographed at certain times of the year.  Preparation is key to a good landscape photo! I was out filming with the the Engage Live team a few weeks back for an upcoming Landscape Photography workshop and we visited a spot along the Causeway cliff path.  I had scouted the location and was there in the late afternoon to shoot some long exposures with the LEE Little & Big Stoppers.  Being able to use the TPE App on my iPhone, I then planned to revisit this exact same location, at both sunrise and sunset.  The three different images are all shown below.  You can see how different they all are because of the time of day I visited.  But on each visit, I knew exactly where the sun was going to be and used this to my advantage. So, next time you plan to head out with your camera, make a conscious decision to think about your location and the position of the sun. This is also one of the many topics I’ll be covering on my full day Landscape Photography workshops.  If you fancy joining me, then... read more

Mourne Mountains Landscape Photos

Mourne Mountains Landscape Photos

A few months ago I spent the weekend in Co Down.  To be more precise, on the outskirts of Rostrevor.  I had planned a couple of early morning shoots to capture some Mourne Mountains landscape photos. On Sunday morning, we headed out to Murlough Bay in search of a sunrise.  Conditions were decent.  Very little cloud cover and plenty of frost on the ground.  It probably would have been great conditions for some Astro photography too had it not been for the 75% moon in the sky (which you can actually still see in the image below). As it got closer to dawn, I knew the sunrise was going to lack drama & colour so I turned my attention to the view looking back towards the Mourne Mountains and waited patiently for the sun to rise and light the mountains and beach.  Which thankfully it did. This was shot on the Canon 5DS with the 16-35mm L lens.  I used a Lee circular polariser and a 0.6 ND Grad just to tame the sky a little.  Exposure was 1/6 sec at f11 at ISO50. This image is available from our online shop by clicking this link HERE.... read more
