Ryan & Sam

A few weeks ago I photographed Ryan & Sam in the studio.  Here are a few of my favourite images from the shoot…

New Additions

The last couple of days have been very busy….  And here’s why.  Two lovely little brindle boxer pups approx 10 weeks old.  Now the fun starts with the toilet training….

Awarded Licentiate of SWPP

I’m pleased to say that I have been awarded the Licentiate of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.  What this means is that I am now officially recognised as a qualified member of the society. The Licentiateship was awarded following the successful submission of a panel of 20 wedding images. Highly qualified judges assess the panel for technical skill and quality.

For those interested, the panel of 20 images can be viewed here.

Frustrated With Your Schedule?

I thought I’d share another source of inspiration for me from the Joyce Meyer book I’m reading at the minute.  Talking about being busy and how sometimes being busy does not necessarily mean that you are fulfilling your purpose in life.  Sometimes we all need to take a step back and just rest in His presence.  The who, what or when of service should never replace the WHY.

Here is an interesting “version” of the well known 23rd Psalm.  I’ve also included the proper version below – I know which version I am gonna try and stick to.

Are you frustrated with your schedule?

Here is man’s way…

The clock is my dictator, I shall not rest.
It makes me lie down only when exhausted.
It leads me to the deep depression, it hounds my soul.
It leads me in circles of frenzy for activities’ sake.
Even though I run frantically from task to task,
I will never get it all done, for my “ideal” is with me.
Deadlines and my need for approval, they drive me.
They demand performance from me, beyond the limits of my schedule.
They anoint my head with migraines, my in-basket over-flows.
Surely fatigue and time pressure shall follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the bonds of frustration forever.

Here is God’s way…

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
       for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,
       for you are with me;
       your rod and your staff,
       they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
       You anoint my head with oil;
       my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
       forever.

Passion & Purpose

Talking about passion & purpose in life, Joyce Meyer writes in her book ‘I Dare You’, that Satan hates true success.  He hates to see people fulfil their purpose and will fight against those who set themselves to do so.

“No matter what happens, I encourage you to keep trusting God because He is faithful.  Don’t give up!  It is amazing what God can do with people who refuse to give up.  Stay positive.  Look at the possibilities, not the problems.  Glance at your problems and STARE at Jesus.  Stay focused!” Joyce Meyer

I’ve just started reading this book at the weekend and already I am being challenged about living out my purpose with real passion instead of just going through the motions.

Congratulations!

Just a quick blog post to confirm the winner of the Valentine’s Lifestyle Location Shoot is Jenny Marshall.  A big thanks to everyone who entered.

Slieve Binnian

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of heading back up into the Mournes with a few friends.  It had been a few months since my last trip, but thankfully the rain stayed away on this occasion and we managed to hike to the summit of Slieve Binnian and back down again in around 4 hours.  The mountain mist and low cloud did play havoc with visibility at times but thankfully it cleared enough to allow us to stick to our original planned route.

I never like to head into the mountains without my camera, and so here is one of my favourite images from Saturday.  This is the view looking back as we began our approach to Binnian’s summit tors.  Here you can see Ben Crom Reservoir with Slieve Bearnagh being smothered in low cloud far in the distance.  It’s moments like this that really highlight the beauty we have in our wee country.  It also re-affirms to me the power & majesty of our Creator God…

Black & White Favourites | Part 2

A few weeks back I posted some of my favourite black & white images from last year.  As promised, here is the 2nd installment.  I love the simplicity that black & white can bring to an image.  There is a timeless quality with black & white that you sometimes loose with colour.

What The Duck

Just a little light hearted entertainment for you this Tuesday afternoon.  May appeal more to some of the photographers who drop in on the Blog…

Details…

I often get asked by brides about the length of time they should leave for their photographs.  While there is no ’set’ formula for this as every wedding is different, I normally like to have at least 15 – 20 minutes alone with the bride & groom, and then the same with the whole bridal party.  This can vary due to the time of year, where the photos are being taken and ofcourse the weather.  Regarding family group shots, again I aim to take no more than 10 or 15 minutes to shoot these.  I’m always very conscious of not keeping the bride & groom away from their guests for too long, so I try and be as efficient as I can on the day.

A lot of people have the misconception that once I have finished with the ‘main’ photos, that’s my job done.  Far from it.  Most of the time, I aim to blend into the background and keep shooting as the bride & groom mingle with their guests.  This helps to provide a complete coverage of the wedding day.  As well as this, I spend a lot of time shooting all the special details of the wedding day.  Things like shoes, flowers, button holes, table decorations etc.  The little things that make each wedding unique.  Here are just a few of my favourite details from the last year…
