Mourne Mountains Engagement Shoot

Northern Ireland has so many amazing locations for your engagement shoot, one of my favourites being the Mourne Mountains in Co Down. If you’re planning an engagement shoot in Northern Ireland, then hopefully this blog will give you a little inspiration.

I always get excited when a couple mentions that they enjoy hiking! Holly & Dilip booked me to photograph their wedding next year at Larchfield Estate and wanted to get some engagement photos taken. Knowing that they enjoyed hiking, and hiked and camped in the Mournes regularly, I was excited to start planning their engagement shoot with them around their love of the mountains.

Engagement Shoot In The Mourne Mountains

Our plans were to hike high up into the mountains before sunset. We hiked up to the summit of Slievenaglogh from Trassey and the higher we went, the higher into the clouds we went! But that really worked in our favour as we were able to create some moody and mystical images.

I always advise my couples if they are planning a Mourne Mountains engagement shoot to wear hiking gear on the way up and bring their ‘shoot clothes’ in a rucksack and get changed up there. This means they don’t have to do a long hike and worry about ruining their clothes.

After shooting along the summit of Slievenaglogh it was time for a wardrobe change just before we began to descend down out of the clouds just in time to see the sun begin to break through to the side of Meelmore. I’m always amazed at how quickly conditions change in the mountains, and this was a prime example as just a drop in elevation of about 50 metres made such a great difference.

I’m often asked about when the best time of day is to shoot. That’s an easy answer – golden hour! Golden hour refers to the hour just after sunrise or the hour just before sunset when the sun is at its lowest in the sky and creates a beautiful warm soft light that just looks awesome! Keep scrolling through Holly & Dilip’s photos and you’ll see what I mean! That’s why I try and plan my Mourne Mountain engagement shoots around that time – I want you guys to experience the best light ever!

So if you’re considering an adventure in the mountains, drop me an e-mail to info@stevenhanna.co.uk and let’s start planning your shoot.
